Abstract
In recent years, diabetes mellitus has become the leading cause of end-stage renal disease in the developed countries.
The clinical features of 39 cases of diabetic patients among 307 patients who began hemodialysis treatment in Chungnam National University Hospital from January 1985 to December 1991 were reviewed retrospectively.
@ES The results were as follows.
@EN 1) Incidence rate of diabetic ESRD was 12.7% in recent 7 years and annual incidence rate of diabetic ESRD tend to increase year by year.
2) The average age of the patients on dialysis was 55.7¡¾10.9 years in diabetic patients and 43.4¡¾11.7 years in the nondiabetic patients, which is significantly differen(p<0.0010. the sex distribution was not significantly different between two
groups.
3) In diabetic patients, the hemodialysis was begun in about 12.9(3~29) years after diagnoss of diabetes.
4) The most common initiating cause of the dialysis was fluid overload in both groups and the order of frequency was symptomatic uremia, resistant hyperkalemia, pericarditis and severe acidemia.
5) The serum creatinine levels checked just before hemodialysis were 8.6¡¾4.7 mg/dl in diabetic patients and 13.0¡¾5.7mg/dl in the nondiabetic patients, which was significantly different (p<0.001).
6) The serum phosphorus levels were 5.4¡¾1.8 mg/dl in diabetic patients and 7.3¡¾2.2 mg/dl in the non diabetic patients, which was significantly different (p<0.001). the serum calcium, potassium, albumin and hemogiobin levels were not different
significantly between two groups.
With the above results, we think that early prepara tion for dialysis is needed in the patients wit diabetic ESRD
